Tele-Verification (TVR)
Tele-Verification (TVR): Tele-Verification (TVR) is the scripted phone check a lender runs on a loan application, calling the applicant, their employer or business, and the references provided to confirm identity, employment, declared income and awareness of the loan. It is the fastest, lowest-cost verification layer and usually precedes any physical visit.
Why Tele-Verification (TVR) matters in credit and collections
- Calls follow a script so that outcomes are comparable across agents: identity confirmation, employment or business confirmation, address confirmation, loan awareness and consent, and reference corroboration.
- Outcomes mirror CPV: positive, negative (contradiction, denial of employment, applicant unaware of the loan), not reachable after a defined number of attempts, or refer for a credit-manager decision.
- Employer verification should use an independently sourced number (company board line or official HR contact), not a number supplied by the applicant, because fake HR numbers are a common fraud pattern.
- TVR cannot confirm what a phone call cannot see — scale of business, physical occupancy or asset condition — so it is a gate before, not a substitute for, CPV and Field Investigation.
How TVR is scripted, executed and scored
TVR runs from a script so that outcomes are comparable across agents and auditable later. The applicant call confirms identity through details that are not on the face of the documents, re-confirms residence and office addresses, verifies the loan amount, purpose and tenor being applied for, and checks that the applicant is personally aware of and consents to the application. The employer or business call confirms designation, tenure and continued employment, or in the case of a business, that it operates at the stated address. Reference calls corroborate the applicant's address and stability.
Outcomes follow the same convention as CPV: positive when all checks corroborate, negative when a check contradicts the application — employer denies the applicant works there, the applicant is unaware of the loan, a reference does not know them — and not reachable after a defined number of attempts across time slots. Anything partial or ambiguous becomes a refer for the credit manager.
The known weakness of TVR is that a phone number proves nothing about who answers it. Fraud rings supply applicant-controlled numbers as HR contacts and references. Well-run TVR therefore sources employer numbers independently — the company's listed board line or a verified HR directory — and treats any insistence on a specific mobile number as a signal in itself.
Regulatory basis
TVR operates within the RBI Master Direction on Know Your Customer, which requires regulated entities to establish identity and address through customer due diligence and makes them responsible for verification performed by outsourced agencies. Calls to employers and references must be limited to verification and must not disclose loan details beyond what the check requires, consistent with the RBI Fair Practices Code and data-protection obligations.

- Source employer numbers independently of the application; a number the applicant supplied verifies only that the applicant answers it.
- Record calls with consent and attach the recording to the file so that a positive TVR is evidence, not a checkbox.
- Define attempt rules — number of tries, time slots, days — so that not reachable is a consistent outcome rather than agent fatigue.
- Use TVR as the gate that decides whether CPV or FI is needed, rather than running every verification on every file.
- Capture alternate numbers and reference details cleanly during TVR; they are the contactability data collections will need if the account slips.
Tele-Verification (TVR) — frequently asked questions
What does a TVR agent ask the applicant?
Identity confirmation through details not printed on the documents, residence and office address, the loan amount, purpose and tenor applied for, employment or business details, and explicit confirmation that the applicant is aware of and consents to the application.
Can TVR replace physical verification?
For low-ticket, salaried and repeat borrowers it often does. For self-employed, secured or higher-ticket lending it is a screening step: a phone call cannot assess premises, stock or asset condition, which is what CPV and Field Investigation exist for.
What is a negative TVR?
An outcome in which a call contradicts the application — the employer does not recognise the applicant, the applicant denies applying, or a reference does not know them. Negative TVRs are normally declines or escalations, not retries.
