Bank statement analysis
What a bank statement analyser does in a loan file
In Indian business lending, BSA in a loan file means bank statement analysis: reading the applicant's transactions to see whether the cash actually flows. Done by hand, an analyst scrolls through hundreds of entries, tags them in a spreadsheet and estimates obligations from memory. A bank statement analyser does the same work automatically and the same way on every file. Read the basics in our glossary entry on bank statement analysis.
Reads the statement
Parses the statement whatever the bank or layout, and turns every line into a structured, dated, classified transaction.
Builds lending metrics
Rolls transactions into monthly cash flows, balances, obligations and bounce rates that map directly to your credit policy.
Checks it against other sources
Compares bank inflows with GST-declared turnover and bureau exposure, and flags the mismatches an analyst would otherwise have to spot.
For most MSME borrowers the bank statement is the most honest document in the file. Financials are prepared once a year and GST turnover is self-declared, but the statement shows money that has actually moved. That is why an automated bank statement analysis step sits at the centre of automated credit underwriting rather than at its edge.
Statement sources
Statement sources: PDF, net-banking and Account Aggregator
Lenders receive bank data in three ways, and a bank statement analysis software built for India has to handle all of them without the analyst changing their process.
PDF and scanned statements
Statements uploaded by the borrower or the sales team, from 77+ Indian bank channels. This is still the most common route for proprietorships and small businesses, and it is where tampering checks matter most.
Net-banking downloads
Statements the borrower downloads from their net-banking portal and shares directly. These are usually cleaner to parse than photographed or scanned copies, but still arrive as a file the borrower has handled.
Account Aggregator
Consent-based statement fetch through the AA framework. Data flows from the bank to the lender under a recorded consent, so there is no PDF to edit and no manual upload to chase.
Account Aggregator bank statement analysis is the cleanest route where the borrower's bank participates: the data arrives directly from the bank, with the borrower's consent recorded, and the question of whether a PDF was edited simply does not arise. See our glossary entry on the Account Aggregator framework for how consent, Financial Information Providers and Financial Information Users fit together.
Extraction
What the analyser extracts from every statement
These are the signals an experienced analyst looks for when reading a statement by hand. The analyser extracts them on every file, in seconds, so the analyst starts from a finished summary instead of a raw PDF.
Average bank balance (ABB)
Average balances across the period, the figure many lenders use to size working capital and check whether the account can carry an EMI.
Monthly inflows and outflows
Credits and debits by month, with cash-flow volatility, so seasonal dips and one-off spikes are visible rather than averaged away.
Income quality
Genuine business receipts separated from self-transfers, loan disbursals and round-tripped money, so the lender sizes on real income.
EMI and fixed obligations
Existing EMI burden identified from recurring debits, the input you need for FOIR and repayment-capacity checks.
Bounces and returns
Cheque, ECS and NACH bounce rates and inward return patterns, one of the clearest signals of banking discipline.
Cash deposits
The share and pattern of cash credits, which matters for businesses whose turnover claims rest on cash sales.
Circular transactions
Money moving out and back between related accounts to inflate turnover, flagged as circular banking rather than counted as revenue.
Salary credits
Regular salary inflows for salaried and self-employed-with-salary applicants, separated from other credits.
OD / CC utilisation
How heavily overdraft and cash credit limits are drawn, and whether the account is running close to its limit month after month.
Customer and vendor concentration
How much of the inflow comes from, and outflow goes to, a handful of counterparties.
GST payment matching
GST payments in the statement matched to the borrower's filing pattern, and bank inflows mapped against GST-declared turnover.
Stress indicators
Falling balances, rising bounces and irregular credits that point to liquidity stress before it shows up in the bureau.
Fraud detection
Bank statement fraud and tampering detection
An uploaded PDF is a document the borrower has had in their hands. Bank statement fraud detection starts with checking the file itself, then whether the transactions inside it make sense, and finally whether they agree with what other sources say about the same business.
The most reliable control is to avoid the PDF entirely: statements fetched through Account Aggregator come straight from the bank, so there is nothing for the borrower to edit.
Document checks
File metadata that does not match the issuing bank, such as an unexpected producer application or a modification date after the statement date, along with font and format anomalies where edited lines do not match the rest of the page.
Balance roll-forward breaks
Each closing balance should equal the opening balance plus credits minus debits. A break in that arithmetic is a strong sign that a line was added, removed or altered.
Behavioural and cross-source patterns
Circular banking, round-tripping and inflated turnover, plus bank inflows that disagree with GST-declared revenue. CARMA Assess also detects fraud patterns that only appear across sources, such as duplicate identities.
Outputs
Output metrics that feed FOIR, DSCR and the CAM
Bank statement analysis is only useful if its output lands where the credit decision is made. Existing EMI burden and salary or business income feed FOIR; actual cash flows support the DSCR worked out from financial statements; and the whole banking summary becomes a section of the Credit Appraisal Memo (CAM).
Inside CarmaOne, the analyser output flows straight into Auto-CAM, which reads financial statements, GST returns, bank statements and bureau data together and assembles a committee-ready memo in under 10 minutes instead of the usual 2-3 days.
What the credit team receives
- Month-by-month inflow, outflow and balance summary
- Existing obligations ready for FOIR and repayment-capacity checks
- Bounce, return and stress indicators against policy thresholds
- Circular transaction and concentration flags
- Bank inflows reconciled with GST turnover and bureau exposure
- A banking section written into the Auto-CAM memo
Triangulation
BSA + GST + bureau triangulation
A single statement can look healthy and still be misleading. CARMA Assess treats bank statements as one of 13 core data engines and checks them against GST, bureau, MCA and statutory and litigation data, so contradictions surface before the credit committee sees the file.
Bank statements
Does the cash actually flow? Actual cash-flow strength, volatility and bounce patterns behind the numbers.
GST returns
What turnover does the business declare? 2,200+ automated GST checks, with declared turnover compared against bank inflows.
Credit bureau
How does the borrower repay others? Repayment history, delinquency and leverage, cross-checked against EMIs visible in the statement.
Typical contradictions include healthy GST filings alongside frequent bank bounces, turnover that is far higher on paper than in the account, and EMIs in the statement that do not appear in the bureau report. Our article on GST reconciliation red flags in MSME underwriting walks through the most common patterns, and the bank statement analysis guide for MSME underwriting covers how to read each signal. Physical checks can be added through CPV and field verification, and the same triangulation supports vendor due diligence for enterprises extending trade credit.
Integration

Comparison
Manual vs automated bank statement analysis
How the banking review of a typical MSME loan file changes when the analyser does the reading. For a market overview, see our list of the top bank statement analyser software in India.
| Step | Manual review | Automated with CarmaOne |
|---|---|---|
| Collecting statements | PDFs chased over email and WhatsApp, often incomplete | PDF upload from 77+ bank channels, or consent-based Account Aggregator fetch |
| Transaction tagging | Line-by-line reading and spreadsheet tagging | Every transaction classified automatically in seconds |
| EMI and bounce detection | Depends on the analyst spotting recurring debits | EMI burden and bounce rates extracted on every file |
| Circular banking | Rarely caught unless the analyst traces counterparties | Circular and round-tripped transactions flagged |
| GST and bureau cross-check | Separate reports compared by eye, if at all | Bank inflows mapped against GST turnover and bureau exposure, mismatches flagged |
| Credit memo | 2-3 days to assemble a CAM | Auto-CAM produces a committee-ready memo in under 10 minutes |
| Analyst time per file | Roughly 3 hours across bank, GST, bureau and financials | About 15 minutes of review |
Compliance
Consent, data protection and RBI compliance
Bank data is among the most sensitive information a lender holds. Lenders remain responsible for meeting the RBI Master Directions(opens in a new tab), and the platform is designed to support those obligations rather than work around them.
Account Aggregator consent
Under the AA framework the borrower approves each data request, for a stated purpose and period. Sahamati, the industry alliance for the AA ecosystem, publishes ecosystem guidance at sahamati.org.in(opens in a new tab).
DPDP Act, 2023
Consent-based access, 256-bit AES encryption at rest and in transit, and SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 controls help lenders handle borrower bank data responsibly under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act.
RBI audit trail
Every action, comment and approval is captured in an audit trail, so a credit decision and the banking analysis behind it can be reconstructed and explained during inspection.
Bank statement analyser FAQs
Common questions from NBFC, bank and fintech credit teams
A bank statement analyser is software that reads a borrower's bank statement, classifies every transaction and turns months of entries into lending metrics: monthly inflows and outflows, average balances, existing EMI obligations, bounces, cash deposits and signs of stress or circular transactions. CarmaOne's Bank Statement Analysis module parses PDF statements from 77+ Indian bank channels, or consumes data fetched through the Account Aggregator framework, and extracts these signals in seconds.
In lending, BSA stands for bank statement analysis: the step in credit underwriting where the lender reviews six to twelve months of the applicant's bank transactions to judge real cash flow, repayment capacity and banking discipline. For MSME and business loans it is often the most honest document in the file, because it shows money actually moving rather than turnover that has only been declared.
The analyser parses PDF statements from 77+ Indian bank channels. It can also consume statements fetched with borrower consent through the Account Aggregator framework, which removes the PDF step altogether and the risk of a tampered upload.
The borrower approves a consent request in their AA app, the bank (as Financial Information Provider) shares the statement data directly with the lender (as Financial Information User), and the analyser processes it like any other statement. Because the data comes straight from the bank under a recorded consent artefact, there is no PDF for the borrower to edit, and the consent trail sits alongside the credit file.
It can surface the patterns that matter for credit: circular banking and round-tripping, inflows that do not match GST-declared turnover, stress indicators and bounce streaks. CARMA Assess goes further by detecting fraud patterns that only appear across sources, such as circular banking, duplicate identities and inflated turnover. For the strongest protection against edited PDFs, fetch statements through Account Aggregator rather than accepting uploads.
An analyser answers what is in a document. CARMA Assess answers whether to lend, how much, and what has changed since. It adds cross-source contradiction detection (GST turnover vs bank inflows vs bureau exposure), fraud patterns that only appear across sources, post-disbursement monitoring and portfolio-level risk views. If you already pay for an analyser, CARMA Assess can consume that feed rather than duplicate it.
Yes. Bank Statement Analysis is available as a standalone, pay-per-use API that sits alongside your existing LOS, LMS or core banking system, with no replacement required. You can also use it inside CARMA Assess or the full CARMA Core credit operations layer, where its output feeds Auto-CAM directly.
The platform is SOC 2 Type II certified and ISO 27001 compliant, encrypts data with 256-bit AES at rest and in transit, and keeps a complete audit trail of every action, comment and approval. Consent-based access through Account Aggregator helps lenders meet their obligations under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023.
