Digital Address Verification (DAV)

Digital Address Verification (DAV): Digital Address Verification (DAV) confirms remotely that a loan applicant lives or works at the declared address. The applicant opens a secure link at the address; the session captures device location, a live photo and supporting proof, and the system matches them with the declared address and KYC records. Mismatches and higher-risk files are escalated to physical CPV.

Why Digital Address Verification (DAV) matters in credit and collections

  • DAV captures GPS coordinates during a consented session and compares them with the geocoded declared address, flagging distances beyond a tolerance set in policy.
  • Liveness checks and face match against the KYC photograph confirm that the person at the location is the applicant, not a stand-in.
  • Device and network signals — mock-location apps, emulators, VPNs, the same device across applications — are screened because GPS alone can be faked.
  • Lenders typically use DAV for low-risk segments and as a first pass, escalating mismatches or high-ticket files to physical CPV or Field Investigation.

How a DAV session works and where it can fail

A DAV journey usually starts with an SMS or WhatsApp link sent to the applicant's verified mobile number. With the applicant's consent the session reads device location, asks for a live selfie with a liveness check, and requests photographs of the premises — the entrance, a name plate or a utility meter — together with an address document where policy needs one. The system geocodes the declared address and measures the distance from the captured coordinates; results within the tolerance pass, results outside it are flagged.

Identity and place are verified together. Face match against the CKYC or Aadhaar-based KYC photograph shows that the person at the location is the applicant. Metadata on the photographs, such as capture time and coordinates, shows that they were taken live during the session rather than uploaded from a gallery. For businesses, signboards and stock in the photographs can be compared with the GST registration and the declared nature of business.

DAV's weak points are well known: location can be spoofed through mock-location apps or emulators, an applicant can stand at a relative's house, and rural addresses often geocode poorly. Mature implementations therefore read device-integrity signals, check whether the same device or coordinates appear across unrelated applications, and treat DAV as one input rather than the last word — escalating doubtful results, high-ticket files and negative-area pin codes to physical CPV.

Regulatory basis

The RBI Master Direction on Know Your Customer permits digital processes for customer due diligence, including a Digital KYC process in which a live photograph is captured with its geo-coordinates and time stamp, and Video-based Customer Identification Process (V-CIP). DAV as practised for credit verification is a lender-designed control built on these principles, with its use, tolerances and escalation rules set in credit policy, and the data captured must be handled in line with consent and data-protection obligations.

How lenders deploy DAV safely

  • Send the link only to a mobile number already verified in KYC, and expire it quickly.
  • Set distance tolerances by geography — tighter in cities, looser where geocoding is weak — and document them in policy.
  • Combine GPS with liveness, face match and device-integrity checks; any one alone is easy to defeat.
  • Screen for repeated devices, coordinates or photographs across applications, a common sign of organised fraud.
  • Escalate mismatches, high-ticket files and negative-area pin codes to physical CPV rather than overriding them.

Digital Address Verification (DAV) — frequently asked questions

Is digital address verification accepted by RBI?

RBI's KYC Master Direction permits digital due-diligence processes such as Digital KYC with geo-tagged live photographs and V-CIP. Whether DAV replaces a physical visit for credit verification is a decision each lender makes in its own policy.

Can DAV replace a physical CPV?

For low-ticket, low-risk segments many lenders accept DAV alone. For higher-value loans, self-employed borrowers or negative-area addresses, a physical CPV or Field Investigation is usually retained.

What if the applicant is not at the address when the link arrives?

The link is normally valid for a limited window so the applicant can complete it once at the address. If it expires or the location does not match, the lender resends it or switches to a physical visit.
